ABOUT US
You can think of Math Team and Mu Alpha Theta as two organizations within one club. The registration and dues are combined; you don't have to sign up for both separately. Mu Alpha Theta is essentially the National Math Honor Society, so you must meet certain requirements to join*. Practically speaking, the main club function under Mu Alpha Theta is tutoring. Members may sign up to tutor other students either from NGHS or across the US through Study Buddy (see Points/Lettering tab). Tutors will receive both club points and community service hours. Math Team refers to the competition aspect. If you sign up for the club, you are automatically registered to be eligible to participate in various contests we compete in throughout the year, both online and in-person**. We will have weekly practices to prepare for these competitions.
While of course we hope to do well on competitions, the most important goal is that this club will provide you with an enjoyable experience and community that genuinely enhances your high school years. And we encourage you to not let your own perception of your ability in math (or lack thereof) stop you from checking out our club! Whether you've had a passion for math since age 4 or you're still figuring out your interests and want to try something new, we hope you'll consider joining Math Team/Mu Alpha Theta!

*If you are in geometry, you are considered an associate, meaning you're not technically a member of Mu Alpha Theta yet. If you are in pre-calculus or above and have at least a 3.0 average math GPA (out of 4.0), you qualify as a member of Mu Alpha Theta. In terms of the club, there's basically no difference between an associate and a member other than the point requirement. Either way, you can still register for the club and participate in all our activities and competitions.
**As of Fall 2020, we will only be participating in online competitions until further notice. See the Meetings/Events tab for more information about competitions.
